1066 Countryside

Rural 1066 Country is so vast and unspoilt that even the most intrepid ramblers could lose themselves for days. A walk through our countryside offers a spectacular tour of the area's finest sights and takes in the remains of Pevensey Castle and Battle Abbey together with the field on which King Harold fell.

Boasting a selection of fabulous medieval towns, 1066 Country is also close to the glorious countryside of the High Weald. Rolling sandstone hills meet the sea with fabulous beaches between Rye and Hastings which are ideal for exploring rock pools and finding dinosaur footprints.

The landscape provides a setting for festivals celebrating the historic period such as re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings and the medieval festival at Herstmonceux. Nature reserves provide an opportunity to explore special habitats like the rare meadows, heath and sandrock at Hastings Country Park; ancient woodland at Brede High Woods and wetland at Rye Bay Nature Reserve.
